Pros & Cons of Banning Backpacks in School
Some schools are making the decision not to allow the use of backpacks. Backpacks can be physically unhealthy for students, take up space and can contribute to school violence. However, backpack bans can also have adverse effects. Classroom learning time is cut, locker space is limited, and individuality and self-expression is taken away.

Pro: Reduces Pain
-
Students fill their backpacks in excess; aches and pains associated with carrying a backpack can be detrimental to a child's health. If backpacks are worn improperly and weight is distributed incorrectly, students suffer from back, neck and shoulder pain. More serious effects, such as scoliosis, permanent posture damage and nerve sensitivity, have been attributed to the misuse of backpacks. Some schools have banned backpacks to lessen the consequences of backpack-related symptoms.
Pro: Takes Up Less Room
-
Backpacks are bulky and heavy, and they can be a means of disruption in a classroom. Educators have a hard time teaching while trying to maneuver through a sea of backpacks. Backpacks stick out; not only are they a nuisance to those walking through a classroom, but also, they take up space in hallways. The already confined spaces within schools are made less available due to the immense size of backpacks. Also, students have injured themselves and others trying to move in crowded corridors. The implementation of a backpack ban frees up space and allows for teachers and students alike to have a more positive learning experience.

Pro: Creates a Safer Environment
-
Schools are concerned about the safety of students since backpacks have become a way of transporting guns, drugs and other harmful supplies. Banning the use of backpacks lessens the opportunity for a student to sneak in destructive materials.
Con: Loss of Time, Personal Space and Individualism
-
Backpacks can help with organization and independence. When a school bans backpacks, it must compensate for the loss of personal storage space. Classroom learning time is cut because there are more trips to lockers. Lockers are often too small; with the addition of more books and supplies, they can be jammed and hard to organize. Students also feel a lost sense of self when their freedom to choose a backpack is taken away.
