Activities for a Retirement Community
Seniors who live in retirement communities are presented with a wide range of activities to participate. Activities are beneficial to seniors as they promote socialization and physical activity, which keep seniors bodies and minds active. Whether it's exercising, playing sports or taking an art class, seniors find dozens of ways to be entertained in a retirement community.

Hobbies and Games
-
Seniors in a retirement community can enjoy working on hobbies and playing games. Some retirement communities offer classes in subjects such as ceramics, flower arranging, gardening, lapidary, painting and pottery. Other classes for sewing, crocheting, cooking and woodworking may be offered as well. People in a retirement community might play card games such as bridge, poker and canasta. Other games include bingo, mah-jong and rummikub, a two- to four-player game played with numbered tiles.
Recreation and Fitness
-
Active seniors may be presented with a long list of recreation and fitness programs. These may include exercise programs and sports. A retirement community may offer golf stretch classes, low-impact aerobics, stretch exercise, Tai Chi, water aerobics and yoga. Athletic seniors can play billiards, croquet, golf, lawn bowling, swimming, table tennis, bocce ball, water volleyball and pickleball, a game similar to tennis. Some retirement communities even have ponds for catch-and-release fishing and trails for walking and jogging.

Dance
-
Dancing is a great way for seniors to remain active. More than having a good time when you go dancing, it can also be beneficial to your health, as it's a good form of exercise and helps improve balance. It can help with mental health, as well, by having to recall dance steps, thereby improving memory. Some dance classes in retirement communities include line dancing, tap dancing, ballroom dancing and ballet.
Clubs
-
Retirement communities often offer special interest clubs that seniors with similar interests can join. Sometimes, if a club doesn't exist, you can form your own club if there's a large enough group interested in signing up. Clubs where seniors can make new friends and spend time enjoying what they love together include antiques appreciation clubs, art clubs, computer clubs, photography clubs and RV traveler's clubs. Writer's clubs, sports clubs, astronomy clubs and gardening clubs may also be available in retirement communities.
