Pack all essential items for camping outdoors.

A forgotten item can dampen a camping trip or, worse, increase danger during your time outdoors. Do yourself a favor and make a packing list of all the items you may need before venturing out in the wild. The items on your list depend on your personal needs and preferences as well as information on weather conditions and campsite regulations.

  1. Gear and Equipment

    • Pack necessary gear and camping equipment such as a tent, stakes, sleeping bag, trekking poles, multi-purpose pocket knife, headlamps, binoculars and flashlights. Prepare your day pack or backpack by ensuring there are no tears and broken parts before you start packing any items. Sporting gears you may want to bring include bicycles, inflatable boat with paddles, fishing equipment, snowshoe and canoe or kayaking gear.

    Clothing

    • Pack clothing depending on the season of your camping trip. Be prepared for unforeseen weather conditions. Wear moisture-wicking fabrics during warm weather and layers of insulation during winter time. Don't forget protective pieces like hats, sunglasses, bandana, gloves and visors. Wear durable shoes suited for the type of terrain you will tread on the way to your campsite and at the camping grounds where you will be staying. Consider adding clothing items like fast-drying pants or shorts, long-sleeve shirts, swimsuits, synthetic or wool socks, sleepwear, insulating jacket or vest, waterproof jacket and pants.

    Food and Hydration

    • Add energy foods rich in nutrients for your camping trip. Choose portable food items that have long shelf life and that are convenient to carry. The amount of food should depend on your personal sustenance needs for the duration of your trip. Dried fruits, nuts, energy bars, cheese, crackers, granola, cereal, meat jerky and bread are ideal items to carry. Bring sufficient amount of hydration such as water and energy drinks.

    Electronics

    • Though you are enjoying the wilderness, you may want to pack certain electronic items. Items such as a digital camera, memory cards, cellphone, chargers, batteries, video camera and music player are either necessary or luxury items that may enhance your camping experience. Outdoor enthusiasts like to capture scenery along the route and campsite using a camera or video recorder. See that you have enough batteries and memory space for the amount of pictures and videos you intend to take. (Some campsites provide electric service).
