Celebrate with something less traditional than flowers.

Whether you are celebrating a first anniversary since the first date or a 50th wedding anniversary, couples can find romantic ways to express their love on any budget. For an anniversary on a tight budget, think beyond store-bought gifts and plan a special afternoon or evening together to celebrate your relationship.

  1. Back to the Beginning

    • Take her back to the place where the relationship began. If the first date was the starting point, then consider returning to the restaurant, movie theater or other venue. Before the second "first date" takes place, prepare a photo album containing the most memorable pictures from that time to the present. Arrange for a florist to deliver her favorite flowers during the date to surprise her. Without rehearsing, tell her why she is special. It does not matter how it sounds, the point is that it is true.

    Romantic Picnic

    • Give the gift of a romantic afternoon. If a park or safe wooded area is nearby, take her for a romantic walk and picnic. Prepare a picnic basket with some of her favorite foods. While on the romantic stroll, engage in conversation on topics that are valued by each of you, and pick a flower bouquet using her favorite colors as a guide. If parks are not available, consider preparing a picnic area in the backyard or a room in the house. Taking a casual stroll around the neighborhood to demonstrate that romance is in the heart and does not require props.

    Star in a Book

    • Plan an evening of being close and reading the type of novel that she loves. If there is a particular book that she loves, then cuddle close on the couch and read to her. For something different, have her star in a romance novel. Many printers offer book templates through which the couples' names can be inserted into the story. With a variety of topics, such as romance and action, she can be the main character of a sizzling romance or the hero in an action-based book. Stories can also be customized to include family pets, children and particular scenarios that are relevant to the couple's life. Regardless of what is chosen, make sure that the television and other technical gadgets are off while you read and she hears your voice and the sound of your heartbeat.

    For the Music Lover

    • For the music lover, consider purchasing tickets to a concert of his favorite band. Put the extra effort in and dress according to the genre. If the opera is the entertainment of choice, pick out an elegant dress. Compile a list of his favorite songs and burn them into a format compatible with an iPod. Purchase an iPod and then go a little further by having it engraved to include a message of love. After the concert, go out for dinner so he can talk about how great the concert was and present him with the iPOD loaded with his favorite music.
