Ideas for Wood Dog Kennels

Wooden homes for dogs provide a sense of natural aesthetics.

Ideas for building wooden dog kennels range from a simple doghouse to a facility designed for multiple dogs. Wood as a medium for a dog kennel offers a natural material to construct designs that harmonize with the surroundings of the kennel location. Using the different stages of processed wood and incorporating various types of wood results in an almost endless number of ideas for kennels.

  1. Rustic

    • Rustic designs for wooden dog kennels provide an accent to a home in a rural setting. Construction consists of rough wood or branches with the bark remaining intact. This type of building structure combines raw wood with dry seasoned wood.

The rustic style also utilizes the method of putting a square peg, the dry wood, into a round hole in the raw wood. As the raw wood dries it forms a solid joint around the dry peg. Styles for this material can range from a simple A-frame kennel to a multi-story structure.

    Thatched Roof

    • A thatched roof made of rushes or straw provides a historic topping to a wooden framed kennel. Siding for the kennel of white bleached wood or rough unfinished lumber allows this style to fit into any setting.

    Barn

    • A rural setting or backyard can accommodate a scaled down barn to act as a kennel. Post and beam construction offers a sturdy structure, with the finish painted to fit in with the barns surroundings.

    Log Cabin

    • Another idea for a country setting is a design that resembles a log cabin. Here the logs are smaller branches with the bark removed. The construction is the same as building a regular sized log cabin, just on a smaller scale.

    Geodesic Dome

    • Kennels don't have to be square or rectangular. An idea for a kennel from a cultural adaptation consists of using the shape of an igloo or dome. This dome shape, constructed on a wooden framework, can be covered with wood and can incorporate a skylight.
