Colleges offer graduating high school seniors scholarships to major in biology.

Biology is the field that studies the relationship between living organisms and the environment. To encourage aspiring biologists to pursue careers as biological scientists, scholarships are offered to incoming college freshmen and current high school students. Biology scholarships for high school students assess qualifications ranging from academic achievements and high school standardization test scores, to formal essays on investigative and scientific research.

  1. PFG Scholarship Program

    • Offered through the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh University's Department of Biology and Microbiology, the Proteomics and Functional Genomics Scholars Program provides scholarships up to $10,000 per academic year. Graduating high school seniors who will be incoming freshman at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh are eligible to apply. Students must be interested in a career within the field of biology, chemistry or computer science and will be trained in scientific methods and mentored by peer and faculty members. Other benefits of the program include participation in research projects and internships.

    Bioscience Summer Research Program for High School Students

    • The Department of Biology at the University of Utah offers scholarships to high school students interested in attending the school's eight-week bioscience summer research program. Awards are available for 20 students entering their senior year and include camp tuition fees, faculty mentoring and a $500 stipend. In addition to the application, students must submit an official high school transcript, two recommendation letters (one should be from a science instructor), and an essay detailing the applicant's personal and professional interests in biological sciences. Proof of completion of an algebra and biology or chemistry course are also required.

    Young Naturalist Awards

    • The Young Naturalist Awards program provides students with the opportunity to submit a science essay based on a scientific investigation. The essay should include tables, charts, graphs, photos or illustrations that demonstrate applicants' understanding of investigative and scientific research. Essays should be no longer than 20 pages, include a references list of print and online publications, and fall into one of the following categories: biology, ecology, Earth science or astronomy. Applicants must be in grades 7 through 12 and enrolled in a public, private, parochial or home school in the United States.

    Lander University Biology Scholarships

    • Lander University provides scholarships to both current students and graduating high school seniors planing to major in biology. The Elizabeth Adams Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshman students who plan to teach biology following graduation. Scholarships awarded based on financial need or high school academic achievement include the Alumni Association Scholarship and the Fuji Scholarship. Awards that select candidates based on high school standardization test scores such as the SAT and ACT include the Amanda L. Wagoner Scholarship, James Thomas "Tommy" Tollison Scholarship and John Perkins Barratt/Margaret Leonard Park Scholarship. All awards require that applicants hold a minimum 3.0 GPA and remain a biology major throughout their undergraduate program.
