Adobe Photoshop is an application for creating, editing and manipulating images. For example, you can use it to crop photos, erase wrinkles from a model's face, add surreal effects to images or generate smaller-sized pictures to use on websites. Photographers, artists and graphic designers often use Photoshop on iMacs to create commercial and artistic projects, which they can do because the application is compatible with the computer.

  1. Photoshop Versions

    • Adobe Photoshop comes in different versions. The latest version of the professional-level version is called Photoshop CS5. CS5 Extended comes with extra tools to create 3D and moving images. Photoshop Elements is geared toward consumers who want to make photo albums at home and do basic image editing. Photoshop Lightroom 3 is an application designed to streamline work with digital photos

    About the iMac

    • The iMac is a computer made by Apple. Unlike some computers that have the processor in one unit and a separate display, the iMac combines a flat screen display with the hard drive, processor, optical drive, camera and speakers into one device. Apple currently sells versions with a 21.5-inch display and a 27-inch display, as of March, 2011. Models come in a variety of configurations, with different hard drive sizes and processors.

    Photoshop Compatibility with the iMac

    • The latest version of Photoshop for Macs requires at least 512 MB of random access memory (RAM), 2 GB of hard drive space, a multicore processor, a 1024-by-768-pixel display and a DVD-ROM drive. The latest iMac models meet or exceed these technical requirements, depending on their configurations. At minimum, an iMac has 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, a 3.06 GHz multicore processor, a DVD-ROM drive and a display with 1920-by-1080 pixels.

    Using Photoshop on the iMac

    • After installing Photoshop on an iMac, you double-click on the application's icon to launch it. Before you begin using it, you might want to adjust preference settings, such as what percentage of the iMac's RAM you want to let Photoshop use. If you have an external hard drive plugged into the iMac, you can designate it for use as a scratch disc, where Photoshop will store large files while it works on them. Photoshop is compatible with iPhoto, Apple's native image management application. Click on "Preferences" in iPhoto and then click on the "Edit Photo" pull-down menu to select "In Adobe Photoshop" to automatically launch Photoshop when you are working with an image in iPhoto.
