Tips for Reference Checks

Checking references is a core part of the hiring process. It allows you to get an outsider's view of the job candidate. Not only can you learn whether the individual did a good job with a previous employer, but also get an idea of how well liked he was as an employee. Do not overlook the value of checking references before making a hiring decision.

  1. Ask for Specifics

    • When you request references, ask job candidates for specific information. Request names, phone numbers and titles, so you know exactly who you will call. Also inquire as to the nature of the relationship, so you know whether the individual will be able to provide the information you need for your reference check.

    Be Brief

    • References don't like to spend a great deal of time talking on the phone, particularly for a former employee. Keep your questions short and simple, getting to the point of what you need to know. Otherwise, you may take too much time and not get anything out of the call. Think of just one or two questions that you really want to know about a candidate and focus on that when you make your call.

    Ask Pertinent Questions

    • It doesn't matter if a candidate had a penchant for Indian food in the break room or chatted too much during meetings; those issues can be handled if you decide to hire the person. What you need to know is if the person showed up every day and on time and how effectively and efficiently he did his job. You need to know whether or not he got along with others well and was a good team player. Seek out the important pieces of information.

    Check More Than One

    • Don't just talk with the first reference and settle on that. Talk with three to get a well-rounded view of the candidate in question. While the first one may have nothing but good things to say, the other two might have had issues, which is a red flag. Avoid hiring regrets later by being as thorough as possible with all checks now.
