Update your Windows 98-based computer to add more features.

Windows 98, a PC operating system, is the predecessor to Windows XP and includes utilities for accessing the Internet and computers on a corporate or home network. Microsoft released the operating system in 1998. An upgrade, Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), added an array of features and enhancements. Windows 98 SE remains available for purchase from certain vendors as of 2011.

  1. Windows 98 SE Update

    • You can install the Windows 98 SE operating system as an update or patch to your computer's original Windows 98 operating system. The installation process uses a "wizard" that walks you through entering the SE's product key, your personal information and the options and features you want to include.

    Features

    • Windows 98 SE includes the following features and options: Internet Connection Sharing that speeds up adding a new Internet Service Provider (ISP) and connecting your computer to a home or business network; Year 2000 update for accepting and processing dates beyond the year 2000; security and operating system patches for your computer's original version of Windows 98; Internet Explorer 5 web browser and Outlook Express 5 email application; NetMeeting 3 for connecting to remote computers and servers; updated device drivers for Windows 98; and updated versions of DirectX and WebTV for Windows 98.

    Purchasing

    • Windows 98 SE remains available for purchase from surplus, auction and computer outlet stores/vendors that specialize in older software and operating systems. The upgrade comes on a CD-ROM and includes a Microsoft-certified product key.

    Issues

    • Microsoft no longer supports or sells Windows 98, or the Windows 98 SE operating system or CD-ROM. The SE operating system will still function on your computer but Microsoft ceased issuing security and system patches for the operating system.
