Gather Information
-
Do a complete assessment of the problem by talking to the people involved and gathering all of the facts. Look at all aspects of the problem from different perspectives to see how different sides are affected. Understanding the problem thoroughly will open your mind to coming up with comprehensive solutions. Then, based on the facts, you can make an informed decision about how to solve the problem.
Brainstorm Solutions
-
Step back from the problem and give yourself a break before brainstorming. Start with a clean piece of paper and write down all of the solutions that come to mind. Consider brainstorming with several people to increase the number of possible solutions. Make sure that all persons involved in brainstorming understand the problem at hand.

Look for Solutions to Similar Problems
-
Analyze your problem and then look for similar problems in the same arena. For instance, if you are a small start-up business with sluggish sales, look for other businesses that had similar problems. Notice how they solved their problem. Look to apply the same or similar solution to your problem. This technique requires great research and time. Also, remember to look for problems that are similar in many aspects and not just a few. This increases the chances of finding a more suitable solution.
Find the Root Cause
-
Analyze the problem thoroughly, attempting to get at the root causes of the problem. Don't just ask what the problem is, but rather how the problem happened. Talk to key people, and analyze the situation and scenario in which the problem occurred. Create solution(s) that address the root causes of the problem.
