Core Curriculum Standards for the State of New Jersey
Many states use core curriculum standards as a means to ensure adequate learning through appropriate content inclusion and instruction. Although different states include a variety of specific standards, most incorporate at least basic education areas such as language arts, math and the sciences into necessary curriculum contents. The state of New Jersey includes these types of basic standards as well as many more in its core curriculum.

In 1996, the New Jersey State Board of Education adopted the Core Curriculum Content Standards for the state's schools. In response to numerous educational struggles such as low test scores and the inability of students to demonstrate mastery of a basic education, the set of standards aimed to improve the quality of Pre-K through 12 education. The curriculum standards are to be inclusive of content and/or instructional areas over time. The New Jersey State Board of Education requires that the standards be reviewed and revised every five years.

The State Board of Education intends the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards to ensure that all resident students in grades Pre-K through 12 receive the education necessary to attend post-secondary schools or move onto a meaningful career. Additionally, the most recent version of the standards (2009) addresses the need for the skills necessary in modern society. These include accessing and interacting with information, using technology, understanding global challenges and working in a multi- or cross-cultural economy.

The specific content in New Jersey's Core Curriculum Content Standards reflects the state's philosophy regarding educational priorities and the growing world market. Content areas for grades K to 12 are: Visual and Performing Arts; Comprehensive Health and Physical Education; Language Arts Literacy; Mathematics; Science; Social Studies; World Languages; Technological Literacy; and Career Education and Consumer, Family, and Life Skills.

The Department of Education maintains a page for the 2009 standards with links to resources, professional learning and standards searches. Additionally, teachers can find resources and lessons regarding instructional practices as they relate to the Core Curriculum Content Standards, and engage in professional discussion. Other components of the website allow individuals to download and print standards and access supporting materials.
