Why Use Organic Pesticides?

Why Use Organic Pesticides? thumbnail
Organic pesticides help control insect problems in the garden.

Organic pesticides are an option for gardeners who are concerned about damaging the environment and their garden plants by using synthetic chemicals. Although made from naturally occurring ingredients, organic pesticides can also be toxic and harmful to pets and humans. This is because many still contain chemicals, even though they are derived from natural sources. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Safety

    • Organic pesticides are not always non-toxic, but when chosen carefully there are options that are much less harmful than their chemical counterparts. Pesticides, such as rotenone and nicotine sulfate are both extracted from plants, but are more toxic than their synthetic counterparts, carbaryl and diazinon, according to Colorado State University Extension. Boric acid, neem oil and pyrethrum, however, are organics that can be used safely around humans and animals, and are short-lived in the soil.

    Effectiveness

    • Despite their natural foundation, organic pesticides are often just as effective at repelling pests and protecting your garden plants as synthetic chemicals. They effectively target insect infestations, when used as directed, and help protect your garden from further harm. In some cases, however, expect to apply more than once to effectively control insects, advises New Mexico State University Extension entomologist L.M. English.

    Availability

    • Organic pesticides don't have to be purchased from a gardening store. In many cases, you will have the vital ingredients needed to make an effective concoction in your kitchen cupboards. Cayenne pepper, talcum powder, coffee grounds and vinegar are just some of the substances that can be used as a basis for homemade pesticides.

    Targeted Formulations

    • Organic pesticides are also available in several different formulations, each designed to target a specific problem. Some organic pesticides contain citrus oil, for instance, which is effective at killing flying insects. Diatomaceous earth, in contrast, targets insects in the soil and dehydrates them to the point of death. Commercial chemical products are rarely as focused and tend to be toxic to all garden insects and vegetation.

    Non-fatal

    • In contrast to chemical products, organic pesticides are available that repel insects rather than destroy them. These are particularly appealing to gardeners who merely want to keep insects away rather than destroy them in their droves. Products with ingredient such as garlic or citronella oil make effective insect repellents for gardens.
