The Best Haitian Charities

Haiti is still recovering from the January 2010 earthquake.

It is challenging to choose a charity based in another country. There are charities for women and children, charities to provide medical services, and those set up to offer support and shelter. Donors want to know that the money they donate, whether $1.00 or $1 million, will go to a charity that has a proven track record of using their money in the way in which it is intended, and that the money will go directly to the people who need it, and not to organizational overhead.

  1. Healthcare Charities

    • Doctors Without Borders provides medical care to people in crises such as armed conflicts, epidemics or natural disasters. In Haiti, the organization provides surgical care in the wake of armed conflict, helping manage a cholera epidemic, and provides women health and emergency care as well.

Located in western Haiti, in Jérémie, Haiti, the Haitian Health Organization assists people living in rural Haiti, supporting more than 100 villages. According to the organization's website, 92 per cent of the funds go directly to serving the community. The organization supports an outpatient clinic, relief programs, education programs and sanitation projects.

Saint Boniface Haiti Foundation provides health care for the rural area of Fond des Blancs in Haiti. The hospital offers preventative and ambulatory care for the citizens.

    Hunger and Poverty Charities

    • ActionAid International USA is a nonprofit dedicated to eradicating poverty in poor and third-world countries. The organization works in several program areas, including international policy, food acquisition, women's rights, emergencies, HIV and AIDS and education.

Fonkoze provides micro-loans and other financial services to rural citizens of Haiti. A U.S. dollar in Haiti goes much farther than a dollar in the U.S., so with micro-lending, a $25 loan will help a family build financial stability and find a way out of poverty.

Hands Together establishes schools, orphanages, and medical clinics in the Port-au-Prince area, as well as Gonaives, Haiti. Since 1997, the organization has also run a program that provides for the elderly. Hands Together operates in Haiti's largest and poorest neighborhood -- providing hundreds of jobs to the residents.

    Children's Charities

    • Love a Child, Inc. is an orphanage located in Haiti. With 13 schools in the country, the organization is a member of the Evangelical Council of Financial Accountability, and has the Independent Charities of America Best in America seal of approval.

Hope for Haiti partners with people and organizations that are already providing Haitian children with education. According to their website, 96 cents of every dollar received goes to subsidize teacher training and education, and pay for supplies.

    Disaster Relief

    • Haiti is still recovering from the January 2010 earthquake. For over 25 years, AmeriCares has provided more than $10 billion of aid in 147 countries. The organization provides medicine, relief supplies and health care to people who need it. In addition to the Emergency Assistance Program, AmeriCares delivers prescription and over-the-counter medication, surgical and wound-care supplies as well as diagnostics and lab supplies. After Haiti's January 2010 earthquake, AmeriCares sent 200 medical teams to help treat survivors.

Within 24 hours of the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Concern Worldwide began distributing supplies to help the people affected by the disaster. A year later, the organization is still working to help rebuild the city.
