Knocking Sound in a Peerless Kitchen Faucet

Many things can go wrong with kitchen appliances. However, no problem is more difficult than a bad faucet. When your Peerless faucet starts knocking and making noises it means you may not get water for cooking or washing dishes. Everything stops until you figure out what is wrong, and fix it. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cartridge Issues

    • The Peerless faucet has a cartridge in its base that controls the flow of the water through the faucet. This cartridge is made of two discs with holes that line up to form a passageway for water. If debris or sediments clog the holes or disrupt the water flow, knocking sounds may occur. This is not typical, but it is easy to fix. Take off the handle by loosening the set screw and pulling it off. Remove the bonnet nut and replace the cartridge underneath it.

    Water Pressure Problems

    • Sometimes water pressure causes knocking and sucking sounds in the plumbing. The resulting sounds may appear to come from your kitchen faucet. In reality, air pockets in the pipes are causing these issues, which result from poor or inconsistent water pressure. If this is the issue, the problem will also occur in other faucets in the home.

    Water Hammer

    • Another cause of knocking sounds in a Peerless faucet is "water hammer," a term applied to a phenomenon taking place in your pipes. This happens when you shut off the faucet quickly and waves of energy travel down the pipes, causing them to shake and vibrate. Most homes today use a dissipation cushion to prevent this from occurring. It is a section of pipe that allows room for the energy wave to bleed out. If your dissipation cushion has been removed to make room for a new faucet or sink, this could be the problem.

    Alternative Issues

    • Other issues contribute to knocking sounds in a Peerless faucet. If the handle is loose, vibrations in the pipes can shake the handle and make it knock against the base. Foreign objects inside the faucet may also make noises. Particles or loose parts trapped against the aerator on the end of the spot my rattle and knock when the water comes on. Remove the spout by unscrewing it and check for loose items trapped inside and then replace it to fix this problem.
