Kinds of Paint for a Bathroom
Mildew, peeling paint and brown stains running down the walls generally characterize a bathroom that has been painted improperly. While painting the rest of your house is fairly simple, with standard paint used in the color desired, bathroom paint must be chosen to prevent damage to the walls due to the moisture in the air. Using the correct material on the walls ensures there are no future problems after completing the job. Does this Spark an idea?

Primer
-
Primer is used under the final coloring of bathroom paint, just as it is throughout the rest of the house. However, this primer must be slightly different than the kind used in the other areas of the house. The primer can be water-based or oil-based, however, it must be labeled as moisture-resistant to keep water from seeping into the drywall and causing damage.
Moisture and Mildew Resistant
-
Although the primer may be moisture resistant, damage can still be done to the paint on top if it is not also mildew resistant. Especially in older bathrooms with poor ventilation, mildew becomes a problem, and while the paint will not completely prevent it from forming, it does keep the mildew from penetrating all the way through and causing damage to the drywall underneath.

Finish
-
The finish of the paint when it dries comes in three different styles: matte, satin and semi-gloss. Each has a different look that suits the particular house in which it is used. It is advised that semi-gloss is used for molding, while matte and satin are the preferred styles for the walls. It is rare that a bathroom paint comes in a flat sheen, which has no shine to it, for this makes it less able to withstand water.
Scrubbable
-
Mildew still forms in the bathroom, even though it is covered with resistant paint. Scrubbable paints have therefore become more of the norm in bathrooms, as they allow the owner of the house to just rub off any stains rather than painting over them. These types are usually more for kitchens and bathrooms, for kitchen areas tend to have more stains and food splashed on their walls.
