Jet 1442VS Tool Rest Specifications
Jet produces commercial and consumer wood- and metal-working tools, including the JWL-1442VS Pro wood lathe. A lathe rotates the work piece around an axis, allowing you to shape or cut the work piece using stationary tools like gouges and chisels. These tools sit in a in long grooved section with a clamp known as a tool rest, and the tool rest sits next to the rotating axis and the work piece. The lathe is available either with or without a stand. Does this Spark an idea?

Tool Rest
-
This lathe is sold with or without a stand. The JWL-1442VS does not have a stand; the JWL-1442VSK version has a stand. The lathe sections are the same on both versions. Both versions of this Jet wood lathe come with a tool rest, and the purpose of the tool rest is to keep your tool as close as possible to your work piece. The tool rest helps you use and control your tool while you are working since you don't have to hold the tool in place yourself. Instead, you simply place the tool rest near the work piece and the head of the tool up against the work piece, and the head of the tool eats into the work piece. As the work piece turns, the tool creates gouges, cuts or patterns. The tool rest keeps your tool steady. Before turning on your lathe, make sure that your tool is securely locked in place within the tool rest -- the tool rest has a clamp to which you attach your tool, which helps keep the tool stable.
Operating Specs
-
The swing over the bed is 14 inches long, and the swing over the tool rest base is 10 inches long on both models. The swing refers to the the largest diameter of wood that the lathe can rotate. The distance between the lathe's two centers is 42 inches. The center is a mechanism for holding work pieces in place. Generally, one center is horizontal, and one center is vertical. The distance between the center of the spindle and the floor for the model with the stand (JWL-1442VSK) is 43 1/2 inches, and this distance is 11 5/8 inches for the model without the legs (JWL-1442VS). The stand has four legs, and these legs keep the lathe steady and raise the height of it. The stand is a substitute for a table top if you do not have a work space. The JWL-1442VSK and the JWL-1442VS model lathes use a 1-horsepower, 1-phase motor, which moves at speeds between 450 rpm and 3,000 rpm. Both models have a cast-iron bed, and the JWL-1442VS model has four non-skid feet. The feet help keep the lathe from vibrating or moving while you are working.

Body
-
With the legs, the JWL-1442VSK wood lathe's dimensions are 44 inches high by 17 inches wide by 60 inches long, and it weighs 396 lbs. Without the legs (JWL-1442VS model), the dimensions are 21 inches high by 20 inches wide by 59 inches long, and it weighs 284 lbs. The lathe comes with a cam-lock mechanism, which allows you to change the position of components like the tailstock, headstock and tool rest without using any additional tools. For example, you can adjust your tool rest so that it's closer to your object. The tailstock helps you make holes in your object, including holes for lamp cords. On both the JWL-1442VS and JWL-1442VSK models, the headstock rotates up to 360 degrees, and it has 45-degree and 90-degree stops.
