Koozie Crafts & Ideas

Keep your drink warm and trendy with a homemade koozie.

Beverage koozies insulate both hot and cold drinks to keep them at optimum temperatures. Although you can purchase commercial koozies, homemade versions are cheaper and allow you to add some of your own personality to the craft. You can create koozies from many different household materials.

  1. Duct Tape

    • Duct tape has a thousand uses, one of them being to create a beverage koozie. Since duct tape comes in dozens of colors and patterns, choosing tape that matches your personality and style is a snap. So is making the koozie itself.

Cut two 10-inch pieces of duct tape and place them, adhesive side down, on a clean work surface. Overlap the long edges of the tape so they stick together. Lay a soda can along the short edges of the tape and roll the tape around the can. Set the can upright and place a piece of tape, adhesive side up, across the top of the can. Cover the sticky parts of the tape with more duct tape, turning the designed side out this time.

    Sweater Sleeves

    • Whether your old sweater is faded, shrank in the wash or has an irreparable hole, save those sleeves. Since the sweater was yours to begin with, the sleeves make an instant personalized koozie that matches your personal style.

Simply measure the height of your beverage can, subtract one inch and cut a section of sleeve that length. Slip the sleeve onto your can and pinch and pin down one side of the sleeve to make it snug. Stitch along the snugged side, remove the pins and cut away the excess. Your koozie is complete.

    Altered Koozies

    • If you have a handful of old koozies with faded industry logos on them, don't throw them out. As long as they can still insulate, you can give them a new style and reuse them. Look your koozies over and see how you might change them. If your only problem is that they're blank, paint them with some fabric puff paints. Add sorority logos, favorite quotes or leafy designs. An added bonus is that the dried paint makes them easier to grip.

If a koozie logo is beyond repair, disguise it with some scrap fabric. Use old denim, scrap fleece, part of an old pillowcase or even a piece of a scarf. Wrap the fabric around the koozie and stitch it up the side to make it snug.

    Go Leather

    • Leather adds style to almost anything, including your favorite beverage. Craft leather comes in a handful of colors, allowing you to choose your favorite for your edgy accessory. Simply measure the height and circumference of your beverage can. Subtract one inch from the height of the can and add ½ inch to the circumference measurement. Cut a leather rectangle matching your modified measurements and wrap it around the can. Stitch the leather up the side and cut a strip of leather that stretches easily across the top of the can. Stitch it into place with the wrong side up. Slip the koozie off of the can and flip it inside out to hide the stitching. Use paint, embroidery thread, tooling stamps or rivets to decorate the leather.
