IT maintenance often means working on computers at various locations throughout the company or organization. Having a tool box with some basic household tools is standard for most IT support personnel. In this tool box, you should include both standard and Phillips-head screwdrivers, a rubber hammer, pliers, electrical tape, a flashlight and a magnifying glass.
Diagnostics and Software

Software tools are what you'll need most often for technical maintenance. These include programs such as Belarc Advisor, anti-virus and malware software. Backup and recovery software are needed less often but come in handy on special occasions. Dell and other manufacturer provide hardware diagnostics that can help determine hardware issues. Ghosting or cloning software is another important tool.

Not so much of a tool per se, but just as important to keep to resolve problems for IT professionals is to have standard replacement hardware. This includes, hard drives, DVD drives, memory, and a variety of other hardware depending on your needs. Backup peripherals such as printers and monitors are also good to have in case you need a replacement. The other advantage of having extra hardware is that you can use it to determine if the hardware is really the problem by seeing if replacing the hardware resolves the problem.

There are many other specialty tools that you may need depending on your environment and needs. A network tester is a common tool and it can vary greatly in cost depending on the abilities of the tool. A laptop can also be an invaluable tool for testing applications and for storing or copying files. A soldering iron, memory tester, thumb drive and various replacement cables are some other tools, just to name a few.
