Be part of the company's hottest initiatives to get yourself noticed for a promotion.

You have been doing your job for awhile and believe you are ready to move up. On the positive side, your supervisors have seen that you have adapted well and are considering you for a promotion. On the challenging side, from the time you started your position, your supervisors have kept track of your successes and your weaknesses. Now is your time to show your supervisors what you have learned and that you have overcome your weaknesses and can meet their expectations in the promoted position.

  1. The Promotion Interview

    • For the promotion interview, even though you and your boss might have established a friendly working relationship over the years, you will need to put on your professional cap. Do not assume that just because you have worked at the organization for years, you know all about it. Research your potential job. Your supervisor will be interested in and expecting to hear your thoughts for areas of improvement with your years of experience.

    Show Appreciation

    • Having a secure job is a blessing. In considering staff members for promotion, your supervisor wants to see that you value your position within the organization. He is looking to promote someone who is willing to come in early, work late hours and volunteer to assist where you can. He is looking for the best employee in terms of job skills and also work ethic.

    Get Noticed

    • Organizations are changing. Show that you have the skills to change with yours. If the organization is moving in the direction of digital media and e-commerce, get involved in opportunities and programs within the organization to help with that mission. Be part of the company's hottest initiatives and you will get noticed for that upcoming promotion.

    Don't Give Up

    • As an employee, ask what attributes are required for an upcoming promotion. Job skills alone are not necessarily enough. Development in leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills plays a key role as well. If you believe you were a close contender but did not earn the promotion, make an appointment with your supervisor to find out the areas you could improve upon for future positions.
