Distinctive Styles of Font
Writing headings or subheadings in distinctive fonts draws in the reader and enhances the presentation of a document. Fonts are available to download from the Internet, many for free, or you can buy CDs that offer a choice of hundreds. Finding a font that suits the style of the document is vital; for example, using a kids'-style font for a formal document would give the wrong impression.

Fonts can mainly be recognized as Serif (for example, Times Roman) or Sans Serif (for example, Helvetica). The former tends to have curly ends to its letters and is a very old font used originally in "The Times" newspaper. As technology has developed, more interesting and varied fonts have been introduced. However, when writing any formal document or creating a website, basic fonts such as Arial are used, as they are easy to read and recognized most easily by browsers.

A certain style of font needs to be used for formal documents such as contracts, reports, theses, appraisals or government documentation. Examples of these are Calibri, Berlin Sans FB, and Franklin Gothic Demi. All of these can be found in Microsoft Office Word 2007 if you go into the font section in the ribbon and scroll down. You can add additional fonts, such as Terminax and Placard Condensed Font, by downloading them (see Resources).

Distinctive fonts that can be added to a lighthearted document or article are Jokerman, Chiller, Curlz MT or Gigi from Microsoft Office Word 2007. Or, you can download Vademecum. These fonts can be used for invitations or letters to friends, or even in emails.
Creative

Using a creative font in brochures or on websites demonstrating artistic items or crafts adds to the style of the document or site. Examples of these are: Troutkings BN, Vineta BT, AR Darling and Alphabet Soup Tilt BT. These fonts are all available in Microsoft Office Word 2007 by inserting the font from the ribbon. You can download Earwig Factory fonts for free (see Resources). Earwig is a reversed-out ransom-note style that is very distinctive.
