You can have the long lashes you've always dreamed about.

Eyelashes keep foreign matter out of your eyes and act as antannae when something is too close to the eyes, thus triggering the blink reflex. As you age, your lashes may not grow as long and thick, and stress and bad diets can also affect the growth and length of your lashes. If you feel like yours are looking sparse lately, don't give up, as there are some options to make your eyelashes longer. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Conditioners

    • Dermatologist Jeannette Graf, M.D., states that the lash root is delicate and can break easily, and notes that eyelashes need a conditioner just like the hair on your head. Vaseline is a simple, inexpensive conditioner -- just put a thin layer of Vaseline on your lashes at night. Or use olive oil to add moisture to the lashes. If you prefer a conditioner made specifically for lashes, look for protein in the ingredients, such as keratin or biotin.

    Mascara

    • Mascara can make the eyes stand out and the eyelashes appear longer. Apply two or three coats of a dark mascara and brush the lashes before they dry to remove clumps. Some mascaras contain fibers that adhere to the lashes and make them seem longer. Look for mascaras that state they have lengthening or volumizing properties.

    Extensions

    • Eyelash extensions are an option for longer lashes. You bond the false lashes to the real lashes, and this usually last four to six weeks. However, the process is not cheap and may damage your natural lashes as they fall out, according to WebMD. The adhesive in the extensions can also cause allergic reactions in some people.

    Latisse

    • Latisse contains Lumigan, a drug that was originally used by glaucoma patients. The FDA has approved it for the use of growing eyelashes. It works by mimicking hormones called prostaglandins and lengthening the lash growth cycle, according to WebMD. Latisse users get longer eyelashes usually in about eight weeks. You must use Latisse every day, and if you stop, your eyelashes will return to their former length. Side effects include darkening of the eyelid and possibly turning light eye colors brown.
