Supplies to Make Shadow Boxes
Shadow boxes are an excellent way to store and display your special mementos -- from military medals to special ribbons and other keepsakes. Depending on the size you need, shadow boxes can be expensive to buy or have made. Often, finding the supplies for shadow boxes and creating the shadow box yourself can yield a cheaper alternative with the same quality results.
-
Frame
-
Your shadow box frame should be deep enough to support the keepsake you want to display without the item touching the outer glass. Keep in mind, you will have to buy other supplies in addition to a frame, so measure accordingly prior to building or buying a ready-made frame. You can also use a wooden box with a sliding lid for your shadow box frame.
Backing
-
Shadow boxes need a backing. Creating a sturdy backing is as simple as cutting a thick piece of cardboard, spraying some adhesive onto it and stretching a piece of black or colored felt onto the cardboard. You can add a pre-cut mat to the backing before adding your keepsake if you chose, or simply leave the back simple. If you are displaying mementos from holidays, vacations or special occasions, you can also decorate the back with scrapbook paper and stickers. If using a wooden box with a sliding lid, you will only need to decorate the bottom of the box, where items will be displayed.

Glass
-
Your glass can be a variety of different types. Safety glass, scratch-free glass, regular glass and Plexiglas are all offered at most hobby and craft supply stores. Clean and dry your glass well prior to mounting in your shadow box frame. If you are using a wooden box with a sliding lid, measure the glass the same size as the wooden lid you won't be using.
Paintbrushes and Other Decorating Supplies
-
Use paintbrushes, acrylic paint, stickers, decorative paper or freehand drawing to decorate the outside of your box, if you desire.
