Use jack-o-lanterns as part of your wedding decor.

Once considered the domain of goths and rebels, now even the most conventional couples have begun using the spooky symbols and bold colors of Halloween to add intrigue to ceremonies and receptions. From stylized pumpkins and black cats to reproductions of classic Halloween films, the palette of orange, black, purple and lime green is just the beginning for your wedding motif. Incorporate the theme in your decor, attire and food for a delightful night.

  1. Movies

    • "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "The Corpse Bride" and "Rocky Horror Picture Show," along with dozens of monster or zombie movies, create an expansive repertoire for wedding themes, including graveyard-themed reception spaces and severed-finger invitations. Cakes featuring the title characters from Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" or "Corpse Bride" are a way to add spooky romance to one of the focal points of the reception. For "Rocky Horror Picture Show," the theme can include a group rendition of the "Time Warp" featuring the wedding party.

    Dia de los Muertos

    • This three-day celebration that originated with the Aztec people takes place at the same time as Halloween and prominently features skeletons, skulls and coffins. Bright colors and butterflies or hummingbirds are also integral parts of the "Day of the Dead" and can be used in floral arrangements, bouquets and centerpieces. Brightly decorated cakes or cupcakes featuring skeletons and monarch butterflies help fill out the decor, as do patterned table linens and bold accessories on the wedding party.

    Classic Colors

    • Orange, black, purple and lime green create a classic Halloween palette that adds a stylish edge to your decor. Layer gauzy spiderweb-patterned table covers over solid cloths in purple and orange, then accent with black vases filled with lime green daisies or plastic skeletons. For a more classic appeal, use jack-o'-lanterns as centerpieces and surround them with low glass jars full of candy corn and other Halloween candies. Serve cupcakes in Halloween-themed wrappers with plastic picks or candy bones as toppers.

    Trick or Treat

    • Create a full candy buffet, use candy as vase fillers, and make bouquets of wrapped hard candies for a trick-or-treat themed reception. Add whimsy to wedding attire with candy corn earrings, candy-themed boutonnieres, and plastic or real candies in the bouquets. Decorate invitations with candy prints or use a more subtle embossed design to keep the invitations sophisticated. The use of candy and trick-or-treat bags throughout the theme can make the wedding as whimsical as your relationship.
