While you may be afraid to let your teenage son get his own drum set, you have options that will make you both happy. You can get him an acoustic drum set, but instead of putting the regular heads on it, put ones that are made of mesh (the head is the part the drum stick strikes). These mesh heads give your high schooler the same bounce as a regular drum head, but there is only a quiet thud associated with it. Another option is to give him an electric drum set. It is different from an acoustic set, but sounds very similar. With this kind of set he can plug in headphones so that only he can hear the drumming.

Also, this instrument takes a lot of dexterity and dedication, so he will develop these skills which will help him throughout his life. The U.S. House of Representatives states in Concurrent Resolution 355 that "discipline and the ability to analyze, solve problems, communicate and work cooperatively, are vital for success in the 21st century workplace."
Keyboard
-
Get your high school boy a keyboard. This is small, easily stored and can have headphones plugged in it so only he hears what he is playing. Keyboard synthesizers are programmed to make a variety of sounds. If he likes making movies or wants to produce music, then a keyboard is perfect.
