Household Items to Remove Wallpaper

Aging wallpaper can easily make a home look dull, drab and outdated. Old wallpapering must also be removed if the owner plans to remodel, paint or install new wallpaper. Fortunately, wallpaper can be removed with several household items, so there's no need to rush to the store to buy the latest and greatest in wallpaper removal technology. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Dishwashing Liquid

    • Dishwashing liquid combined with hot water can be used to remove stubborn wallpaper. Apply the mixture using a sponge or a spray bottle and let it soak in before attempting to remove the wallpaper. It can also be used to remove stubborn glue spots left behind after removing the wallpaper.

    Fabric Steamer

    • If the owner has a fabric steamer, that too can be used on the wallpaper for removal. Simply run the steamer up and down the wallpaper until it has been thoroughly moistened. Peel away at a corner or edge to remove the wallpaper.

    Hair Dryer

    • A hand-held hair dryer can be used to remove wallpaper---especially a wallpaper border. Simply turn the dryer on and wave it back and forth over the wallpaper. The hot air heats up the adhesive of the wallpaper, helping loosen its hold on the wall.

    Liquid Fabric Softener

    • Liquid fabric softener can be diluted into warm water to remove wallpaper. Mix one capful of liquid fabric softener with 1 quart of warm water. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray directly onto the wallpaper. Pure liquid fabric softener can also be applied directly to the wall with a sponge if the adhesive turns out to be stronger than thought.

    Vinegar

    • White vinegar, when mixed with hot water, helps soften the wallpaper's adhesive backing. Mix equal parts of hot water and white vinegar, then apply it directly to the wallpaper with a sponge. Let it soak in for a few minutes before attempting to pull at one of the corners or edges of the wallpaper. A second application may be necessary to fully loosen the old wallpaper.

    Water

    • Plain water can be used to remove wallpaper. Using a spray bottle, spray hot water directly onto the wallpaper. It may be necessary to let the water soak in for several minutes before attempting to remove it. However, this method will not aid in removing wallpaper that consists of a vinyl covering. The owner can also use a plastic scraper to aid in removing the wallpaper.
