Tips on How to Back Up a Tractor Trailer
Backing up a tractor trailer can be very difficult. This is especially true if you have never backed up a trailer, as you do not have the backing basics down. Don't be afraid. The concept of backing up a tractor trailer is the same as backing any type of trailer.
-
Spectate
-
While it does not actively involve backing up a tractor trailer, watching others back up will help you learn the proper way to back the tractor trailer. This will teach you the right way to back up the tractor trailer, especially if the person you watch is experienced at backing.
Use Clutch Sparingly
-
When backing the tractor trailer, use the clutch as little as possible. When releasing the clutch as you begin to back, your truck may jump a bit at first. As the truck backs without the use of the clutch, it will back easily and slowly. This will not only save you the energy of pressing the clutch in and out, it will keep the clutch from getting hot. When a clutch gets hot, the truck starts to jump much worse, making timing and angling the tractor trailer much harder.
-
Cease Throttling
-
Attempting to cease pressing the clutch goes hand-in-hand with ceasing the throttle. The throttle is one of the enemies of an individual backing. It can easily cause you to mess up the angle you are backing, forcing you to go forward and start backing all over again. By not using the throttle (and clutch), you will idle backwards, making it much easier to slowly back and angle your tractor trailer appropriately.
Pull-Up
-
Mistakes happen when backing. The most common mistake is backing at an odd angle and missing the hole you are aiming to back into. When this happens, simply pull up and attempt to back again. Everyone misses the hole now and then, so do not fret.
