School districts have a long-standing tradition of mothers who participate in school activities. These moms can be very helpful to teachers and school staff, providing volunteer help for the classroom and school while also giving support and nurturing to students. Mothers volunteer to benefit their children, their classroom, their schools and themselves. The National Education Association says, children whose parents are involved in their education tend to have higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly, graduate from high school and go on to post-secondary education.

Volunteering to help with their child's school activities can give a mother the opportunity to interact more with her child, observe him in the classroom, get to know his teacher and classmates and be involved in what her child is learning. A mother's schedule may not allow her to be a frequent presence, but even by helping at an occasional special event, she can have a greater involvement in her child's education and socialization.

    Contributing to the Classroom

The more help parents can provide, the more time teachers have to teach their students. Mothers may work with math or reading games a few days a week, or assist with occasional classroom parties or field trips. Whatever their contribution, they can make their child's classroom better.

Schools depend on parent volunteers -- not just in the classroom. Mothers also serve on committees, coordinate events and sell tickets. They may volunteer to do office work and help out in the school library. In tough financial times, when schools must make budget cuts, mothers can help their child's school by giving more of their time and talents, providing assistance that can protect programs and assure that key services are not lost.

    Self Fulfillment

    • Participating in school activities can help a mother feel good about herself and her contributions. Even if she takes on just a small role, she can positively impact her child's life and the lives of other children simply by having a positive presence in their educational experiences.
