A USB jump drive is a small stick-like piece of memory hardware that allows you to save large files of information in order to transfer to other computers or to keep as a backup. They are small and rectangular in shape and available in a variety of styles and colors. USB jump drives are the answer to an increased need in sharing large files that could not be housed on a single floppy disk or CD. Since they are completely rewritable, you can use the same jump drive over and over again.
Sizes
-
A USB jump drive comes in a variety of sizes and effectively replaces other less effective methods of information storage. For instance, a single 128 MB jump drive is the equivalent to 88 floppy disks and can hold around 100 photos. Jump drives can be any size, but most retail drives run anywhere from 64 MB to several GB of memory. The amount of memory will affect how much information you can fit on the device, but larger memory will cost more money. Purchase a jump drive according to your needs. If you share large files, you may need several GB of memory.

Uses
-
Even if you're a beginner when it comes to computers, a USB jump drive is a must-have item. It can allow you to share pictures with loved ones, as well as serving as a small backup device for important documents and files. At work and school, a jump drive is nearly indispensable as you move information back and forth from home, work and school. Its small size means you always have a way to share documents with you -- some even come as key chains.
How to Use
-
Using a USB jump drive is easy. Locate your USB port on your computer. On a laptop, you'll find it down the side or around the back of the computer. On a desktop, you may have a USB port on the front of your machine; otherwise it will be on the back. It is a thin, rectangular port. Place the end of the jump drive in the port and wait for your computer to recognize the hardware. You can then drag files into the jump drive window or save them directly to the drive. Wait for the files to finish copying and then remove. Repeat the insertion process to upload the information to another computer.
