Many free tools are available to assist the homeschooling parent.

Homeschooling is one of the most rewarding, yet challenging, projects a parent can undertake. There's nothing like the sense of satisfaction that accompanies tending to every aspect of your child's education personally. Between buying books, materials and supplies, however, it can also be an expensive prospect. Luckily, there are any number of free tools and resources available to the homeschooling parent.

  1. Internet

    • The Internet contains a wealth of information for homeschooling parents and their young students. Free online dictionaries, encyclopedias and thesauruses save parents from having to purchase hard copies. Online message boards and forums provide places to connect with other parents and to exchange tips and advice. Homeschooling newsletters received via email are another tool filled with ideas, notices and recommendations to propel parents along the path to success as teachers. Free lesson plans are another advantage of using the Internet as a homeschooling tool. The Internet also provides a connection to numerous applications for grants, scholarships and contests that award prizes and money to assist homeschooling students and parents.

    Homeschool Community

    • Homeschooling parents and students often struggle with isolation as part of their daily routine. As homeschooling becomes more popular, however, support groups and organizations are springing up nationwide to assist parents in their endeavors as instructors and to give children a chance to connect with other students like themselves. Many such organizations offer free membership to homeschooling parents and students. Online location tools exist on homeschooling websites to help parents find resources in their area.

    Libraries

    • Many people often overlook the library as one of the most valuable free homeschooling tools of all. Free reference books, fiction, nonfiction and other materials abound at the library. Read-aloud story times, craft projects, movies and classes are typically free at the library. These activities provide a free hour or so for parents to do lesson planning or reading and research of their own, and also keep kids entertained. Reference librarians are an invaluable source of answers for the homeschooling parent who doesn't know everything.

    Field Trips

    • If you think that field trips involve big money, think again. Look for local attractions that offer free admission. Local art institutes, military museums, historic museums and farms are just some of the places that don't charge for a visit. Pack a lunch and head out with the kids for a cost-free day of hands-on education. Check out the Free Attractions website, which lists no-cost activities nationwide, for a list of freebies in your area.
