Sheer curtains can be used for angel wings and other costumes.

Move over, Maria Von Trapp and Scarlett O'Hara. Repurposing old curtains is not just for the movies anymore. You don't have to make play clothes out of your old curtains like Maria, however. When it comes to sheer curtains, you can find great uses for the dressy fabric that will surprise and delight you.

  1. Grocery Bags

    • Get in step with the green movement by making your own reuseable grocery bags out of sheer curtain panels. The panels are perfect for this use, because the fabric is strong and you can see right through it. You can find patterns on the Internet or at fabric stores that sell patterns. You can decorate the bags for a personal touch, or you can leave them plain. Best of all, you can throw the bags into the washer after each use and know that they'll come out fresh and ready to use again.

    Holiday Uses

    • Because sheer curtain fabric is semi-transparent and luminescent, you can turn sheer curtain panels into holiday items. Hot glue the edges of a panel with sparkly trim, and use the curtain panel as a topper to a dark red or green holiday tablecloth for a glamorous look. You can also wrap sheer curtain panels around the base of Christmas trees for an angelic-looking tree skirt. Sprinkle glitter or gold confetti stars inside the skirt before you wrap it around the tree. You can also make cases for throw pillows to dress them up for the holidays. Be sure to glue on sparkly decorations.

    Costumes

    • Sheer curtain fabric makes great Halloween costumes. You can create a cute angel costume without sewing by simply cutting a hole in the panel for your neck, then wearing the panel as a tunic and belting it around your waist. Use the sheers to make angel wings by attaching the fabric with a glue gun to a wing frame you can create from coat hangers or wire. If you can sew, you can use sheer curtain panels to make a costume for a belly dancer or genie, or make veils for a princess, damsel or bride.

    Picnic Time

    • You may be finished looking at sheer curtains as they hang inside your home, but you can still get lots of use from them outside. Turn sheer curtains into a romantic picnic cloth. The fabric is tough, so it's perfect for tossing over a picnic table. Cut the fabric into the size you need, then hot glue frilly trim or artificial flowers for a fun look. The picnic cloth will turn an outdoor meal into a special occasion.
