The most obvious earth tone color choices -- shades of gray and brown often referred to as neutral colors -- exist in nature, from sand and soil to rocks and bark on trees. In a home, these colors tend to ground the space and can act as a neutralizer for bolder colors. The lightest tones create a sense of openness and can make a space feel larger, while darker values boost the sense of comfort. These colors prove ideal for main areas such as hallways, family rooms and living rooms because of their universal appeal.

Also, the lighter the value, the calmer the effect: A bright cobalt blue will have a dramatic effect in comparison to a soft, robin's egg blue. For a tranquil feel, mid-tone to light blues work best.
