Nature's color palette is varied and dramatic.

Some people associate the term "earth tone" with shades of brown or imagine boring colors. Mother Nature is anything but dull -- all you need to do is look around her ever-changing landscape to discover a color palette filled with possibilities. These earth tone colors work harmoniously together, allowing you to create a logical flow of color from one room to the next without having to resort to shades of the same color. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Comfort Zone

    • The most obvious earth tone color choices -- shades of gray and brown often referred to as neutral colors -- exist in nature, from sand and soil to rocks and bark on trees. In a home, these colors tend to ground the space and can act as a neutralizer for bolder colors. The lightest tones create a sense of openness and can make a space feel larger, while darker values boost the sense of comfort. These colors prove ideal for main areas such as hallways, family rooms and living rooms because of their universal appeal.

    Cool, Calm and Collected

    • For a tranquil feeling in a room, there's no better source of inspiration than the sea and the sky. The most calming of all the colors, blue ranges from cerulean to gray-tinged. When choosing a blue for your home, you must take into account the lighting. A room with lots of natural light can take a more gray blue, but if you put that same color in a darker, under-lit room, it can look depressing. Also, the lighter the value, the calmer the effect: A bright cobalt blue will have a dramatic effect in comparison to a soft, robin's egg blue. For a tranquil feel, mid-tone to light blues work best. Blues in bedrooms and bathrooms provide a spa-like retreat.

    Refresh Your Mind

    • The colors of flora and fauna found in nature evoke a revitalized feeling. Think of how you react to the sight of fresh flowers or grass after a long winter. Green tends to add a feeling or refreshment, making it ideal for a living room, bathroom, bedroom or study. Greens with a blue undertone tend to be calming, while greens with a yellow undertone tend evoke a more energized feeling.

    Bold and Beautiful

    • One of Mother Nature's most brilliant displays appears in a spectacular sunset -- with colors that range from soft violets to blazing oranges and reds -- attracting attention and getting the blood flowing. Red, used in its strongest value, serves as the boldest of these colors. Using red, orange or gold in your home takes courage for some, but these colors definitely turn up the heat in game rooms or dining rooms, where they can stimulate emotions and individual appetites.
