Bacteria can be fought naturally.

The battle against germs is a challenge, especially when faced with the issues of a green environment and the creation of super-germs. Soap and water alone are not effective enough. Some store-bought cleaners are too rough on hands and the environment. Effective alternatives can be found in the cupboard, or no further than the health-food store. For safety reasons, all containers used to store cleaning supplies should be marked; always keep an eye out for allergic reactions. Does this Spark an idea?

Vinegar has been used as a household cleaner for decades. No matter the variety, white, apple or others, they all have 5 percent acetic acid. This gives them an antimicrobial property. It can either be poured or sprayed directing on a surface for cleaning, or it can be mixed with hydrogen peroxide for an even more effective mold and germ killer. The aroma of vinegar may be harsh for some, however, once it dries, the odor disappears. If even this is too much, a drop or two of essential oil can help.

    Borax

    • Just a little of this natural laundry booster can help clean the toughest areas of the home.

Borax is more than a laundry booster; it is also a disinfectant and deodorizer. To properly use this product, mix 1/2 cup with 1 gallon of hot water, or vinegar. Then it can be applied directly or sprayed and wiped clean.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea tree oil is a powerful antiseptic, germicide, antibacterial and fungicide. It can usually be found in health food stores. To make a disinfecting agent, place seven drops of oil in a clean 32-ounce bottle. This can be used on all surfaces.

    Grapefruit Seed Extract

    • Grapefruit seed extract is another effective disinfectant. Only 20 drops in a clean 32-ounce bottle will help fight many bacteria. It has been tested in laboratories as being more effective than chlorine, colloidal silver and iodine. It also has been tested successfully in the battle against foot and mouth disease and Avian influenza.
