In astrology, the element of your a birth sign, also called a triplicity, may influence your personality as much as the zodiac sign you were born under. Fire signs all tend to be very self-confident. Little daunts them, and they tend to give 100 percent to any project they tackle. They naturally gravitate to leaderships roles and others often fall in behind them because fire signs can be very persuasive and convincing. Union leaders, sports team captains and politicians usually have their fair share of Arians, Sagittarians and Leos among their ranks.

The fact that they don't like others to disagree with them sometimes dampens the leadership qualities of fire signs. Leos, Arians and Sagittarians can be argumentative in defense of their own positions and they are generally slow to ask for advice. They have very strong egos and can rarely conceive of the possibility of failure. They're also prone to hot, quick tempers.

Fire signs are strong personalities, and they can easily overpower or have problems getting along with those born under other elements. Their relationships with other fire signs can be volatile because these two similar personalities can find themselves competing for the spotlight. Whoever loses the tug-of-war probably won't like attention shifted to his partner. Fire signs are drawn to earth people, however. Earth signs tend to be cerebral and thoughtful and can supply fire signs with a lot of intellectual energy. Fire and air signs are highly compatible. Air feeds fire and fire heats air. These can be long-term relationships, but not usually placid ones. Fire signs usually do not do well with water signs, because water signs are immutable in their own right and are among the few zodiac elements that can overpower a Leo, Arian or Sagittarean.

Some astrologers believe that what signs significant planets were in at the time of your birth -- usually the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter -- can mute or augment your basic fire tendencies. Even if your birth sign is a fire sign, if your planets are balanced out across all other elements, you would therefore not be as volatile as a pure fire sign. People with planets in fire, earth and air elements tend to be as innovative as a pure fire sign, but they are more capable of seeing a project through to completion. Fire-and-air combinations can be absent-minded and intellectually disorganized, however. People with both fire and water influences can be moody and go to extremes that often seem to contradict each other.
