What is the Difference Between T40 & R40 ThinkPads?
IBM manufactures many different ThinkPad laptop models and series. Each series offers a variety of options and benefits for different uses, such as productivity, portability and entertainment. Two of the series that are offered are the T40 and R40.

ThinkPad T40
-
The ThinkPad T40 series combines a thin and light case with powerful performance and wireless capability built inside. It includes Intel's Pentium M processor with an 855PM chipset. The T40 is built for portability, weighing only 5.4 pounds. One negative about the T40 is that it traded some weight for speed, as it is not the fastest laptop.
ThinkPad R40
-
The R40 is also light, uses the Pentium M processor and has built-in wireless capabilities. Also like the T40, this laptop is not the fastest machine on the market, but it is light, weighing 6.4 pounds. The main difference between these two computers is the screen size, which leads to the difference in weight. The T40 has a 12-inch screen, while the R40's screen is 15 inches.

Overall Review
-
Both these laptops are very similar. If you frequently travel and are not looking for a powerful gaming or entertainment computer, either series will be good for your needs. However, if gaming and audio/video are important to you, there are better options.
Other Options
-
If you like the IBM ThinkPad, there are other models to look at that provide some differences that may be important to individual users. Other models include the T42, X40 and T60. All of these models are similar to both the T40 and R40, but each have small differences from the others.
