Romantic Engagement Ideas

Use a romantic engagement idea to propose to your partner.

Proposing is the first step in a marriage contract, setting the stage and tone for the entire marriage. Create the perfect beginning to your life together with a romantic and heartfelt engagement request, using your partner's preferences and interests to personalize it. Most proposals require planning, so invest energy into the event to make it memorable.

  1. Picture Perfect

    • Mail your girlfriend a photo of you, on one knee, with a diamond in hand. Write on the back of the picture, "Will you marry me?" Include a love poem or short letter that captures how you feel about her. Arrange schedules so you're able to visit around the same time she receives her mail, and knock on the door with ring in hand when you hear her reaction from outside the house.

    Digging for Treasure

    • Plan a day together at the beach. The night before, write on a piece of parchment paper how much you love your girlfriend, and that you want to marry her. Sign your name, then place the paper into a clear glass bottle and seal it. Bury the bottle in a well-marked location for the visit to the beach, so that as you're digging for treasure she can find your gift to her.

    Recreate Falling in Love

    • Think of a location that has meaning to your girlfriend. Where you met, where you first kissed her, or a scene from her favorite romantic movie all work. Recreate the special time and place using everything available to you, such as background music, time of day, similar clothing, ordering the same food and so forth. Let her clue in on her own that you've gone to a lot of trouble before popping the question.

    The Poetry Proposal

    • Buy a romantic book of poetry. Open it up and cut out a small rectangle that fits the ring box, so as to nestle it inside the book invisibly. Write a love poem of your own, and attach it to the page in front of where the ring box lies. Wrap the entire package up like you would a normal present, and hand it to your girlfriend. Make sure she opens it when you're around.
