The best side jobs are those that fit with your work and personal schedule and provide a decent income, but don't create a lot of stress or loss of sleep loss. These may be part-time but steady jobs in the evenings or on weekends, or freelance or project work that doesn't have set hours, but is readily available as your schedule allows. Side jobs can help pay off student loans, create extra income for vacations or future investments, or simply to help make ends meet during difficult economic times.
Bartender or Waitstaff
If you work during the day, but are available in the evenings to wait tables or tend bar, you may find yourself making decent money in tips. Those jobs can be tough, with long hours on your feet. However, steady work is available and if you're good at what you do, you can survive the high turnover that characterizes restaurant and bar work. These jobs can be especially well paying in areas with seasonal swings in population, such as Florida in the winter and northern beach towns in the summer.
Tutoring and Teaching
If you have some expertise in language arts, math, science, social studies, a foreign language or music, you may be able to turn that into a paying gig as a tutor or teacher at a community college or adult learning center. As a tutor, most of your students would be available in the late afternoons or evenings and weekends, but you can establish a schedule that works for you, dictating how much and when you work. You may also consider teaching English as a second language to people who aren't native English speakers. These classes are run through school districts and community education programs.
As business owners look to cut costs and save money on personnel expenses, the opportunities for virtual assistants are plentiful. Rather than pay an executive assistant a full-time salary and benefits, employers can contract with a virtual assistant on an hourly basis to do jobs ranging from Internet research and data entry to making hotel and flight reservations and setting up meetings with clients. You can often do your work from the comfort of your home. You may have to meet with your boss from time to time, but most contact can be online and over the phone.
Housesitter and More
As long as you have a "clean" background, you may be able to find work looking after people's homes while they're on vacation. Your duties might just include getting the mail, watering plants and generally keeping an eye on the house, but they could expand into taking care of the yard and pets. You may also consider marketing your services to older people or those with limited mobility who may be in need of someone to walk their dogs or mow their lawns on a regular basis.
Working as a store clerk during the Christmas rush can be a way to earn extra money for the holidays and establish yourself so you may continue as a part-time employee even after the need for extra employees dies down after New Year's. Start inquiring in October and be willing to work an odd schedule, especially at first. In addition to extra cash, you may also get an employee discount.
