Ideas for Cinco De Mayo Decorations
Cinco De Mayo is a celebration of the 1862 Battle of Puebla, when a small Mexican force defeated the French. However, the May 5th celebration has transformed into a popular Hispanic-American holiday. Decorating for a Cinco De Mayo fiesta requires generous use of colors and any traditional Hispanic themes, such as chilies, sombreros and pinatas. Does this Spark an idea?

Garland Decorations
-
Bring out the festive mood at your Cinco De Mayo party by draping colorful garlands over any walls, fences or posts. Strings of chili-shaped lights bring a warm glow to the fiesta, but buying several strands can get expensive. If you're looking for something budget-friendly, try cutting pepper shapes from red paper and stringing them together to create your own garland.
Use green, red and white construction paper to create Mexican flags you can hang from the ceiling. Print the flag's seal and glue to each flag to make them look authentic. Secure the flags to colorful string to create garlands you can string across the ceiling or between posts.
Pinata Decorations
-
Pinatas can do the double duty of decorating your fiesta area and entertaining guests during the celebration. A pinata is a hollow clay or cardboard shape covered with tissue paper and filled with treats, usually candy. You can create one big pinata for bashing during the party and several smaller pinatas as decoration. Try a sombrero shaped pinata covered with yellow tissue paper, a donkey shaped pinata covered with rainbow tissue paper or chili pepper-shaped pinata covered with red tissue paper.

Centerpiece Decorations
-
Use colorful centerpieces to turn tables into attractive social centers for your Cinco De Mayo fiesta. Buy, or create, cactus-shaped vases for each table to add a distinct desert feel to the area. Create large desert flowers with green chenille stems and folded tissue paper. Gather large bunches of the homemade flowers together to arrange a bouquet for each centerpiece vase.
Use oversized, plastic margarita glasses if you're throwing a fiesta for adults-only. Fill each glass with crumpled yellow or pink tissue paper so that they appear to be filled with margaritas. Cut wedge shapes from green paper to decorate the rim of each glass with a lime wedge. Wrap the base of each glass with paper flowers or paper chili peppers to finish the centerpieces with a festive flair.
Background Decorations
-
Add an authentic touch to your Cinco De Mayo party with colorful background decorations based on general Mexican and/or Hispanic influences. Create maracas to hang from the ceiling, or the back of each chair, with beans, paper mache and craft paint. Hang large cardboard cacti with toothpick needles to decorate empty doors or walls. Use oversized cutouts of mariachi band members or flamenco dancers to give your fiesta an authentic feel.
