Orchid Plants for Wedding Centerpieces
Adding flowers to your wedding cake or table centerpieces ties in the wedding theme from ceremony to reception. Orchids are a common flower chosen for weddings for their beauty and elegant feel. However, not all orchids are created equal. Knowing a few of the choices for types of orchids for your wedding will help you decide which varietal is right for you and your spouse.

Cymbidium Orchid
-
The most popular orchid chosen for weddings, the cymbidium orchid is easily recognized by its white petals with pink detailing. The bloom of the flower is large and also available in pink, light green and yellow. The waxy texture on the petals of this flower keeps it from wilting or drying out. The result is a hearty flower that will hold up on a wedding cake, in a bouquet or in a pot. Like any flower, these are available year-round from specialty growers. However, their actual growing season is winter and spring.
Phalaenopsis Orchid
-
These orchids are more expensive than cymbidium orchids. Because of this, they are not used as frequently as cut flowers. The blooms of the phalaenopsis are smaller than the larger cymbidium orchid. They come in a number of colors as well, including pinks, yellows, whites and pale greens. Some of these have spots of other colors as well. Either leave the plants potted or cut the blooms and scatter them around tables for a finishing touch.

Vanda Orchids
-
Also a more expensive orchid like the phalaenopsis orchid, vandas are ornately colored flowers. The colors are brighter than other types of orchids, coming in shades of red, orange, yellow and blue. Some blooms even have a patterned look to them. Their blooms, however, only last a few weeks, unlike other species that last several months. The delicate blooms look nice floated in a bowl of water or still potted.
Paphiopedium Orchid
-
Often called the Lady Slipper orchid, paphiopedium orchids come in different, sizes, colors and shapes. Common colors include white, pink, yellow green and white. Like the cymbidium, their blooms are waxy making them hardy. These blooms hold up well to outdoor settings. This makes them a good choice for outdoor weddings. Use these strong blooms to create cut flower arrangements, with a grouping of other potted orchids or placed around the wedding cake.
