Graduation is a milestone in life, marked by celebrations and gifts.

Graduation, whether from high school or college, marks a milestone in a person's life. That milestone is usually celebrated with family gatherings, parties and gifts. Those gifts should ideally help the graduates remember the years leading up to their diploma while at the same time helping them prepare for the adventures ahead.

  1. School-Related Gifts

    • Whether your student is finishing his high school or college career, make sure he's bought a yearbook, at least for his senior year. If he hasn't purchased an annual, this will make an ideal gift. While he may not realize the value of a yearbook now, it is one item that will gain importance in the years ahead. In addition, if your student's school sells senior parent ads for the yearbook, be sure to purchase one. This is a very special way to tell your student that you love him and are proud of him. A membership in the school's alumni association will also make a good gift for the graduate.

    Money and Gift Cards

    • Money and gift cards are always appropriate for the graduate. For high school graduates, a gift of money may defray some upcoming college expenses, and the student not going on to school may find it useful to set up a new apartment. College graduates may find a monetary gift will help them with relocation expenses as well as professional attire or equipment. Gift cards, including prepaid cell phone cards, will help students with upcoming expenses, too.

    Furnishings and Technology Items

    • High school graduates will appreciate furnishings for their dorm room or future apartment. These might include posters, engraved picture frames and bulletin boards. Gift baskets for those heading off to college might include shampoos, lotions, toothpaste and an assortment of snacks. A personal digital assistant or watch will help any graduate stay organized. A laptop or notebook computer will be perfect for completing college assignments or writing resumes, and a digital camera will record many memory-making events.

    Inspirational and Personal Gifts

    • Dr. Seuss may be best known for his nonsensical rhymes for children, but graduates of all ages will enjoy "Oh, the Places You'll Go" and the wisdom it contains. Don't forget other inspirational books and even films to send the graduate on his way. A scrapbook containing items from the graduate's early school years to the present will cost little but will provide many memories, and a family portrait will no doubt be welcome as your graduate begins a new life.
