Pakistani Wedding Games

Pakistani weddings include playing games during the four days of festivities.

Pakistani weddings last for four days and within that time many different customs and traditions take place. Playing games before and after the ceremony, as well as at the Groom's house on the fourth day of the festivities is one of those customs. There are several different Pakistani wedding games played by the bride, groom and both of their families.

  1. Purpose

    • Games are considered a way to unite the families of the bride and groom, as well as create intimacy between the newly married couple. Most games tend to involve just the bride and groom interacting or competing with each other. Others consist of just the female or males of the family.

    Dancing Games

    • A celebration including food, music and dancing happens the night before the wedding ceremony.

The bride's family welcomes the groom's family, who come bearing trays of henna and sweets for the bride. The women of the groom's family dance around the trays to begin the festivities. Sometimes a competition game happens to see who dances and sings the best. Both families take turns presenting their best dances and songs.

    Money Games

    • During the reception, the sisters and female friends of the bride play a game called jhooti chupai that consists of stealing and hiding the groom's shoes. The groom negotiates a price for his shoes and pays to get them back. Also, a sister or female cousin of the bride may sit in the groom's seat and playfully demand money to move. The groom offers her gifts or money for his seat.

    Couple Games

    • On the fourth day of wedding festivities, after the ceremony, family members and friends go to the groom's home where several games are played only by the bride and groom. One game involves placing a tray with a water and milk mixture in front of the bride and groom. A ring is immersed in the mixture and the bride and groom must find the ring. Whoever finds the ring first is considered the dominant spouse. Another game requires the bride and groom to untie the thick strings that were attached to their wrists before the wedding. Whoever unties the string first is considered more dominant.
