Online degrees have become increasingly common in higher education. Agricultural education is one area in which potential educators can pursue online degrees and gain the necessary knowledge they need to be certified to teach in the public school system. North Carolina State University (NCSU) offers an online master's degree in agricultural education. The degree is offered as part of the University of North Carolina Online system in which all of the state universities in North Carolina participate. This system allows students to mix and match courses as necessary from collaborating institutions. The Master of Agricultural Education degree offered by NCSU requires the completion of 36 credit hours. Students are given up to six years to complete the entire program. Of the required courses, 21 credit hours are required core courses and 15 hours are elective courses. Courses include areas of study such as foundational studies in agricultural education, technology in agriculture education and curriculum development. The program requires students to pass a comprehensive exam also.
University of Illinois

The University of Illinois offers numerous degree programs in the area of agricultural education. Many of the degrees are in the area of educational policy studies and educational psychology. For aspiring teachers who may not wish to delve into these areas, a Master of Agricultural Education degree is available online. The program offers rolling admission, allowing students to start at the beginning of the fall, spring and summer academic terms. The program requires the completion of 32 credit hours in areas such as foundations in agricultural education, adult education and learning, youth development programs and curriculum design and instruction.

Washington State University offers an online Master of Science in Agriculture that emphasizes agricultural education. The program requires the completion of 30 credit hours and is offered with both a thesis and a non-thesis option. Students are required to complete seminars in agricultural research and contemporary agricultural issues. Approximately nine credit hours consist of core courses, 10 hours of practicum or research seminars and courses and another 10 to 11 hours of electives. Elective areas of study include special topics in agricultural education, cooperative education systems and microcomputers in the vocational classroom.

The degree program requires the completion of 180 credit hours, 75 of which must be completed at Oregon State University. This degree program is suitable for students seeking alternative certification in the state in which they intend to teach. Of the 180 credit hours, 60 credit hours are in the field of agriculture and 22 credit hours are in the sciences.
