Inexpensive Gifts to Give

Give an inexpensive gift to avoid breaking the bank.

If you don't have a lot of cash on hand but someone's birthday or anniversary, or a major holiday is fast approaching, you can give an inexpensive gift that will still show your thought and effort. These gifts will be treasured by the recipient whether you are rich or have hit hard times. As always, it's the thought that counts most.

  1. Baked Goods

    • Almost everyone appreciates a small bag of homemade cookies or brownies, and these are inexpensive to make. Your gift recipients won't be able to tell the difference between a cake mix you buy at your grocery store or from-scratch cookies, so do what you can afford in terms of both time and money. Wrap your baked goodies in colored plastic wrap and tie with some inexpensive ribbon to make the gifts look much more expensive than they are.

    Mix CD

    • If you love music, make a mix CD for the gift recipient. This takes time, thought, and effort, but very little money. You only need your digital music library, a blank CD-R, a jewel case, and a computer that can burn CDs. Make a playlist of songs you like, songs you've just discovered, or songs you're sure the recipient would like. Design a CD case insert with the songs and artists' names using a template in Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher.

    Luxury Soap or Lotion

    • Bath sets can be expensive, but a luxury bar of soap or high-quality bottle of scented lotion can be cheap. Your odds of finding a discount price on these gifts are better online than in a drugstore. A bar of milled soap from Provence, for example, is less than $10 from online retailers like Amazon.

    Day Trip

    • Take the gift recipient out for an inexpensive day trip. Drive to a different city to visit a free museum, or pack a picnic with homemade sandwiches and take it to a park. Going to the beach in the summer can be expensive because of parking fees, but in the off-season, a visit to the beach is a great inexpensive activity -- and you'll have far fewer crowds to contend with.
