The Pros of Carrying Backpacks During a School Day
In most schools, backpacks are an integral part of being a student, and with good reason. When used correctly, a backpack makes a student's life much easier than it would be without any means of carrying the books and supplies that are necessary to get through a school day. Backpacks are also a healthier choice than some other options.
-
Convenience and Time Savings
-
Carrying a backpack allows students to keep their needed materials with them as they travel through a school day. Students with lockers need to make fewer visits to that storage space if they can keep books and other items with them. Fewer trips to the locker will likely translate to fewer times being late for class, especially if the locker is not located near the next class. Students who do not have access to a locker or other storage area can bring what they need to and from school without worrying about forgetting or dropping items.
Organization
-
Backpacks can be an excellent way for students to stay organized. Some styles come with dividers already placed inside, and those that don't can have dividers placed in them, which can be labeled to keep papers and materials for different classes or subjects separated and easy to find. Many backpacks also have multiple pockets for separating writing tools, calculators and even laptops and peripheral devices from the main compartment, making it easy to find materials without rummaging.
-
Expressing Personality
-
Depending upon a school's dress code and backpack guidelines, students can express their personality with a backpack. Sew-on patches, buttons and badges, key chains and zipper pulls can help students exhibit their own personal style. Additionally, sequins, beads, ribbons, embroidery and fabric paint can be used to make a fashion statement while permanent markers and fabric paint can be applied to share favorite quotations, song lyrics or artistic abilities. Some backpack manufacturers also offer the option to have the student's initials embroidered on the pack when ordering a new one.
Better for the Back
-
Unless a student is carrying a very light load, backpacks provide a healthier means of transporting books, notebooks and other supplies needed for school. Using both straps of the backpack allows the weight of the load to be evenly distributed, unlike messenger and tote bags, which weigh down only one side of the body, causing stress to the back and shoulders and loss of balance. Some backpacks offer additional support in the form of padding and weight distribution straps to go around the waist.
