Sometimes asking a child to work harder or to focus better is a task they cannot do, not because they do not want to, but because they cannot. According to Helpguide.org, "A child with a learning disability cannot try harder, pay closer attention, or improve motivation on their own; they need help to learn how to do those things." Parents can utilize online and local resources to find assistance with teaching their child how to learn, and to help educate themselves about learning disabilities.

  1. Learning Disabilities Association of America

    • Incorporated in 1964, the Learning Disabilities Association of America is a nonprofit organization based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that serves learning disabled children, adults and professional organizations.The organization wants to educate the world about learning disabilities and assist disabled children and adults with everyday tasks. The association offers services such as parental support, professional referrals, and school program development. The Learning Disabilities Association has over 200 offices spread over 42 states and 27 countries assisting 15,000 members.

    National Dissemniation Center for Children with Disabilities

    • The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities is a resource center that provides information on learning disabilities to parents, educators and others involved with the educational development of children with disabilities. Based in Washington, D.C., the center provides online resources such as assistance with evaluating children who may have a disability, special education services, and help finding individual state assistance offices.

    National Center for Learning Disabilities

    • Founded in 1977, The National Center for Learning Disabilities helps children, parents and educators. The NCLD assists with finding individual state offices which provide early childhood information, area camps, financial aid and information regarding the legal rights of those with disabilities. The organization also "promotes research and programs to foster effective learning, and advocates for policies to protect and strengthen educational rights and opportunities." In addition, its website can direct you to a local Parent Training and Information Center and provide direct referrals to specialists.

    U.S. Department of Education: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004

    • The U.S. Department of Education supports and maintains the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004, which focuses on children with learning disabilities. The IDEA 2004 website is a "'one-stop shop' for resources related to IDEA and its implementing regulations." The website is a work in progress that will assist with education, financial aid and early intervention for children from birth through age 21. Resources are constantly added to the website to provide the most up-to-date information.
