Cheap and Funny Homemade Gifts

Get crafty with your gift to create something that's hard to forget.

Whether you're on a tight budget or buying a last-minute gift, homemade gifts don't require much to put together and are often inexpensive. Homemade gifts tend to be more personal and hold more meaning. Witty gifts that can make your recipient laugh will be memorable and thoroughly enjoyed.

Drinking Helmet

For a recipient entering college or one reaching the drinking age, create a beer or soda helmet as a gag. This can be made from a hard hat, two cupholders, and straws or tubes that will reach around to the mouth. This gift can also be considered for party animals or older men as a reminder of their glory days.

Organic Bubble Bath

Give your recipient an "organic" bubble bath. Fill a jar with beans and wrap it nicely with raffia or ribbon and put a label that reads organic bubbles. Give the jar with a loofah or a bar of soap. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for your recipient to get the joke.

Food Basket

For recipients who have recently left home to go it alone in the big bad world, give a food basket as a gift. College students and people living in their first apartments often struggle with money. Include cheap or microwaveable foods like microwaveable macaroni and cheese, ramen noodles, canned foods, Slim Jims and hot pockets. Include a note explaining that this is what he'll be living off of while the real world kicks his butt.

A Little Something

Give a large box with a small piece of paper inside. On the paper write "something," and let your recipient know that you just wanted to give them "a little something" for the event.

Youth Pills

For older recipients, take the labels off of old prescription bottles and fill them with jellybeans or small hard candies. Create a new label that reads "Youth Pills." In your card, explain to your recipient that the gift is to help them reverse the aging process a bit.

Photo Album

Fill a photo album full of embarrassing photos of your recipient. At first look, your gift will look thoughtful and nostalgic. Once they open is and see all of the awkward angles, candid photos and reminders of their awkward days, they won't be able to shut the album fast enough.
