Chocolate can work in a variety of savory dishes as well as sweet ones.

The sinfully sweet taste of chocolate is a treat that doesn't have to be delegated to just dessert. If you're having a little get-together and want to make chocolate the star of the show, plan a party with a menu that includes chocolate as the main ingredient in most of the food choice, starting with your appetizers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Chocolate Sauce

    • Create this chocolate sauce to have guests dip their strawberries in. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream in the microwave for about one minute. Then stir in 1 cup of miniature chocolate chips of your choice (such as milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or semisweet chocolate), one tbsp. honey and 1/4 tsp. vanilla, mixing until all the chocolate is melted. Place in a serving bowl next to a platter of strawberries.

    Chocolate Chip Cheeseball

    • This twist on the traditional cheeseball adds chocolate chips for a sweet and savory flavor. Blend together one 8-oz. package of cream cheese, 1/2 cup of softened butter and 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract with an electric mixture. Slowly add in 3/4 cup powdered sugar and two tbsp. brown sugar, then mix in 3/4 cup of semisweet chocolate chips. Cover the mixture and pace in the refrigerator to chill for two hours. Afterwards, remove the mixture from the fridge and shape into a ball. Wrap the cheeseball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for another hour. When you are ready to serve, roll the cheese ball in 3/4 cup of chopped pecans. You can also use other nuts such as hazelnuts and walnuts.

    Chocolate Popcorn

    • Chocolate popcorn is sure to be a hit with anyone who enjoys their popcorn sweet. For this recipe, combine 12 cups of popped popcorn with 12 oz. of salty peanuts in a roasting pan that has been greased. Set aside. Add 12 oz. of milk chocolate chips with 1 cup of corn syrup and 1/4 cup of butter in a saucepan over medium heat on the stove. Heat and stir the mixture constantly, until it boils. Pour the mixture over the popcorn in the roasting pan, and toss to coat. Bake the popcorn in the oven at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for about 45 minutes. Check the mixture often and stir to prevent burning.

    Cocoa Pecans

    • This simple but tasty nut snack can be prepared in less than 15 minutes. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place 1/2 cup of pecans in a bowl of water and let it soak for a couple of minutes. Drain the water from the pecans. Toss 1/2 cup of sweetened cocoa mix over the pecans and toss to evenly coat them. Grease a cookie sheet and place the chocolate-dusted pecans onto it and place in the oven for about five minutes, until the pecans are crunchy and slightly toasted. Watch them closely so they do not burn.
