Dog Cakes for Kids

Dog Cakes for Kids thumbnail
If you know a kid who loves dogs, you know a kid who will love these cakes.

Our pets are usually the first animals kids get to interact with, so it's likely your child loves dogs. If so, you can make her a special treat for her birthday or any time of the year using a dog for inspiration. You might have seen the amazing, carved three-dimensional dog cakes on cake TV shows, but don't worry, you won't have to create something that complex to make a cake everyone will drool over and your child will love. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Round-faced Dog Cake

    • Start by baking a cake according to any recipe; make one or two layers that are from 8 or 9-inch round pans, and make either a square layer or at least three cupcakes. Frost the round cake with vanilla and place cookies or mints for eyes. Ice the cupcakes and cut off the top of one to place it as a snout; add a mint for the nose. Cut a strip of red fruit leather for the tongue. Set the other cupcakes two on each side of the dog's face like ears. If you made a square cake instead of cupcakes, cut out two of the corners, ice them and set them next to the face for ears; then cut a round piece from what remains to use for the snout.

    Standing Dog Cake

    • This cake is made by baking two 9-inch round cakes and then cutting off about 1/3 of the cakes. Stick the layers together with icing and stand them up on the flat side. Place the pieces you cut off next to the standing layers for stability. These will be the legs. Cover the shape using a pastry "grass" tip, which will make the icing look like thick fur. Use a darker icing for the "feet" along the bottom sides and make ears on the front of the cake. Use chocolate chips for eyes and a nose and a rectangle candy for a tail.

    Puppy Cupcakes

    • Whip up a batch of cupcakes and decorate them to look like puppy faces. Ice the cupcakes in whatever color you would like. Then add mints for eyes, a chocolate chip for the nose and a cinnamon candy for the tongue. Cut a chocolate cookie in half and place one half on each side of the face for ears. Add a collar by cutting a small strip of fruit leather and placing it just against the cupcake wrapper under the puppy's mouth.

    Dog Bowl Cake

    • Instead of making a cake that looks like a dog, you can make a dog bowl cake. Bake one 9-inch layer and one or two 8-inch layers. Stack them. Cut a circle about half an inch in from the edge of the top layer; use a spoon to help you dig out a shallow hole. Frost the sides of the bowl in whatever color you would like first. Then frost the hole with either blue for a water dish or chocolate for a food bowl. Add crumbled pieces of cookies to look like dog food and write the child's name on the side of the dish.
