Make a cake that resembles her favorite teddy bear.

For that special celebration of a child's first year, make a cake that brings a smile to her face. Make a cake in the shape of one of her favorite things and decorate the cake to coordinate with the party's color scheme or use bright colors to attract her attention. Novice cake decorators can make a simple cake from a shaped cake pan, while decorators with a little bit of experience can build a multi-level cake with fondant and sugar paste decorations. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Animal

    • For a miniature animal enthusiast, make a cake in the shape of her favorite animal. Make a teddy bear cake using a teddy bear cake pan and decorating the cake with icing colors that coordinate with the party's color scheme. Alternatively, make a rectangular slab cake and make a fondant fence to surround the cake. Bake a batch of sugar cookies cut in animal shapes, decorate the cookies with royal icing and place on top of the cake for a barnyard cake full of animals. For an easy-to-serve lion cake, consider a pull-apart cake made from cupcakes. Make a batch of cupcakes and arrange them into a circle shape for the lion's head. Add extra cupcakes for the lion's mane and decorate the cake with fluffy yellow icing and fondant features.

    Fairytale

    • For a little prince or princess, make a first birthday cake in the shape of a castle. For enthusiastic cake decorators, make a multi-tier castle decorated with butter cream icing and fondant doors and windows. Make lookouts for the castle by covering cake pillars or plastic dowel rods and foam cone shapes with icing and placing the cones upside down on the pillars. Other fairytale cake ideas include a slab cake cut into the shape of a unicorn, crown or magic wand. Make a three-dimensional princess doll cake by baking a cake in an oven-safe bowl. Decorate the dome-shaped cake to look like a princess gown and insert a princess doll into the center of the cake.

    Favorite Character

    • For a child who has a favorite television show, make a cake in the shape of his favorite character. Parents can find cake pans for many popular characters. For those characters without cake pans, make a rectangular slab cake and draw the character on to the cake. Place a piece of wax paper over a large picture of the character and use a pastry bag with a round icing tip to trace the lines of the character. Turn the wax paper with the icing side facing downward onto the cake to leave an impression of the icing. Remove the wax paper and fill in the icing lines to complete the character. For a puppet-type character, make a three-dimensional cake by making crisped rice squares in the shape of the body, head, arms and legs and decorating the crisped rice cake with icing to look like the character.

    Toys

    • Make a cake in the shape of some of her favorite toys. Make a cake in the shape of a rattle, airplane, boat or telephone. Instead of a traditional cake, make square-shaped cupcakes to make a building block tower. Bake the square cupcakes and cover them with smooth icing and fondant letters and pictures. Stack the blocks on top of one another by inserting wooden dowels into the bottom blocks and pressing the second layer of blocks down onto the dowels. Continue stacking the tower with cupcake blocks until it reaches four or five levels high.
