Be open to suggestions from your employees.

Long hours of monotonous work take a toll on employees, and even more so when they feel unappreciated. Foster a positive work environment where your employees will feel like more than just cogs in a machine. Whether your job involves an office setting or outdoor construction work, you can boost productivity by raising morale.

  1. Respect

    • Treat employees with respect. Rather than reprimanding an unproductive worker in front of his peers, take him aside and tell him what he's doing wrong. Don't raise your voice or resort to condescending remarks. In addition, take a friendly interest in your employees. Ask them about their hobbies, families and dreams.

    Change of Setting

    • Take your meetings out of the office building. Treat your employees to lunch at a nearby restaurant or outdoor café. A change of setting feels refreshing and allows your employees to interact more casually. Stay on task; don't become too distracted by the scenery.

    Surveys

    • Pass out surveys asking employees for ways to improve the workplace. Alternatively, create a suggestion box where employees can contribute their ideas. Don't set up the box and forget about it. Provide feedback or make changes to demonstrate your willingness to listen.

    Rewards

    • Reward hard workers with financial gifts such as bonuses, gift cards or gym memberships. Acknowledge successful workers in a group setting; they will appreciate the recognition. Avoid playing favorites by occasionally surprising the entire office with free coffee in the morning. Add some donuts for an additional boost in morale.

    Support

    • If an employee has to deal with a rude customer, provide support and take responsibility. If the verbal abuse comes from a co-worker, intervene with an unbiased opinion. Not only will this maintain teamwork, but it will also reinforce your role as peacekeeper.

    Training

    • Whenever management plans to implement new tools or technology, give your employees proper training. New software or changes in business paper format can frustrate unprepared employees. Keep your employees updated on upcoming changes in methodology.
