The Capacity of a Blu-Ray

Every so often, the technology for watching recorded movies on TV changes. Consumers first could buy videocassettes, which usually had no extra features, except for a possible trailer at the beginning and a short documentary at the end if there was room on the tap. Viewers could not change subtitles or the audio track. Tape was supplanted by DVDs, with higher video quality and many extra features. Now you can watch movies on Blu-ray discs, which are an improvement in quality over DVDs because of their greater capacity for storing movies as well as data.

  1. About Blu-Ray

    • Blu-ray is an optical disc format that was developed to record and play back high-definition videos and store large numbers of data files. While regular DVDs can hold 4.78 GB (single layer) and 8.56 GB (dual layer), Blu-ray discs can store 25 GB (single layer) and 50 GB (dual layer). DVDs are burned with red lasers, while Blu-rays are burned with a blue-violet laser, which is a shorter wavelength and can encode more information in the same amount of space.

    Higher Quality

    • Because Blu-ray discs can store large amounts of data, they support HD video files, which are five times more detailed that the standard-definition videos used in DVDs. Blu-ray discs also have higher audio quality and support up to eight channels of sound, which makes for a more enjoyable film experience when watching them in a home theater equipped with multiple audio speakers.

    Extra Features

    • The large capacity of a Blu-ray disc allows movie producers to include more extra features than they can on DVDs. A viewer can also open the options menu as a layer above the video while it plays, instead of having to pause the movie to make an adjustment. Instead of just listening to the director and cast offer audio commentary, you can see them appear on the screen while the movie displays in the background.

    Blu-Ray Capacity

    • A dual-layer Blu-ray disc can hold more than nine hours of HD video or 23 hours of SD video. The Blu-ray standard allows for increasing capacity up to 200 GB in the future by adding more layers to a disc. Blu-ray discs can store other data as well. Because they can hold more than data DVDs, you might find them more convenient for backing up crucial files from your hard drive.
